The Somaphone is my degree dissertation (‘Design and development of the Somaphone, a Digital Musical Instrument based on a Biofeedback System‘, 1st Class BSc in Audio Production). It is a digital music instrument that uses innate physiological behaviours of the human body (heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature and galvanic skin response) to create music. The idea is that the music created is analogous to the user’s emotional state.
Beyond an interesting way of making new music this instrument could have therapeutical implementations. However, the somaphone has only been developed so far as the interface, transforming the data to music was beyond the scope of my thesis. Hopefully one day I will revisit this and get to the end of it!
